What is Medicare?
Medicare is a US federal government health insurance program that provides healthcare coverage for people 65 and older as well as others who meet specific eligibility criteria.
Medicare is comprised of four parts:
Part A
- Inpatient Hospital Care
- Skilled Nursing Facility Care
- Hospice Care
- Home Health Care
Part B
- Outpatient Care
- Doctor Visits
- Home Health Care
- Durable Medical Equipment
- Preventive Services
Part C
- Also known as Medicare Advantage, an all in one alternative to original Medicare
Part D
- Outpatient Prescription Drug Coverage
How Much Does It Cost?
People who have paid into the Medicare system via payroll deductions (or self employment taxes) for at least 40 quarters (i.e. 10 years) receive their Part A coverage for a $0 monthly premium.
Part B has a monthly premium. This year, most pay $148.50. High income individuals may pay more.
When Can I Apply?
Initial Enrollment Period:
You can first sign up for Parts A & B during the 7 month period that begins three months prior to your 65th birthday month.
