Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage and protects against unlimited drug costs.

How Does Part D Work?

Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription medication. While the coverage is optional, failure to enroll when first eligible may result in a lifetime late enrollment penalty. Some Medicare Advantage plans include Part D Coverage. None of the Medigap plans include Part D coverage so you’ll have to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan.

Extra help is available paying for prescription drugs as well as premiums for individuals who qualify.

How To Get Part D

1.Purchase a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug plan (must be entitled to Part A and / or enrolled in Part B)

OR

2.Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes Part D (MAPD plans)

When Can I Enroll?

Initial Enrollment Period:

When you first become eligible for Medicare.

Annual Election Period:

October 15 – December 7

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period:

From January 1st through March 31st each year if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different MA plan that offers Part D. You can also drop your MA plan and return to Original Medicare (A&B) and then enroll in a stand alone Part D plan.
